Walk a Mile in Their Boots: Gilbert Fundraiser Aids Military Families

The Merrell-Mitchell American Legion Post 39 in Gilbert is extending an invitation to the community for a meaningful fundraising event titled “In Their Boots,” set to take place on Saturday, March 23.

This distinctive event not only aims to provide participants with a glimpse into the life of a military service member but also supports the Arizona Fisher House in Tucson, a sanctuary for the families of veterans and active military personnel undergoing treatment.

The fundraiser encompasses a two-fold activity day, starting with a poker run to four nursing homes that house veterans. Participants will then undertake a mile-long walk through the historic heart of Gilbert, all while donning military-issue boots to symbolize the weight carried by those who serve.

For those without their own boots, Allied Surplus is providing lightly used combat boots, emphasizing the event's intent to let participants walk a mile in a service member's shoes, though wearing the boots is not mandatory.

The Arizona Fisher House, the sole facility of its kind in the state and part of a global network of 184 houses, offers free accommodation to family members of hospitalized veterans or active military personnel.

It features amenities like a communal kitchen, laundry facilities, and spaces designed for family comfort, ensuring that loved ones can stay close without the burden of accommodation costs. While the government covers utilities and major furnishings, donations support the house's operational needs, from linens and furniture to food provisions.

Last year's fundraising efforts by the Gilbert Legionnaires amassed $30,000 for the Arizona Fisher House, and this year's goal is to surpass that achievement.

Registration for the poker run kicks off at 8:30 a.m. at the post, with the walk commencing at noon, taking participants on a route through Gilbert's historic district.

The event not only offers a prize for the individual who collects the most donations but also allows for direct contributions via champfoundation.org for those unable to attend.

Gilbert's KAPOW! Superhero Run: A Heroic Adventure Awaits at Freestone Park

The town of Gilbert is inviting families to unleash their inner superheroes at the annual KAPOW! Superhero Adventure Run on March 23, held at Freestone Park.

This event is not just a fun run but a family adventure that integrates more than 15 obstacles designed to challenge and entertain parents and their mini heroes. The fun extends beyond the race course, with "Gotham City" offering a host of activities at the finish line, ensuring the adventure continues even after the obstacles have been conquered.

The event is scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m., providing ample time for families to enjoy the activities. Tickets are available for $40.
