Beyond Wealth: Gilbert's Struggle with Youth Mental Health and Behavior
In the affluent corridors of the southeast Valley, particularly Gilbert, a spike in youth violence and high-profile incidents like the tragic beating death of 16-year-old Preston Lord have ignited conversations about the effects of wealth on children's behavior.
Gilbert, with a median household income notably above the national average, is witnessing a phenomenon some refer to as "affluenza"āa term popularized after a 2013 legal case where a wealthy teenager's reckless behavior was attributed to his inability to understand the consequences due to his privileged upbringing. This concept, although not recognized as a legitimate psychological or legal defense, has sparked debate over the mental health and behavioral patterns of children from affluent backgrounds.
The research of the late Suniya Luthar, a psychology professor at Arizona State University, revealed surprising findings: affluent children exhibited higher rates of depression, anxiety, and substance abuse compared to the national average. This contrasted sharply with the initial hypothesis that wealth would serve as a protective factor. Luthar's work, alongside others in the field, suggests that the pressures of high expectations, coupled with the vast choices afforded by wealth, contribute to a sense of directionlessness among rich kids.
Experts like Barry Schwartz, a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and Christopher J. Ferguson, an associate professor at Stetson University, offer insights into the complex interplay of societal coarsening, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on adolescent isolation, and the role of parenting in shaping children's empathy and behavior. They argue that while wealth can provide more opportunities, it also comes with its unique set of challenges, including a potential detachment from community and societal norms.
This situation calls for a deeper reflection on parenting practices and societal values. It underscores the necessity for parents in affluent communities to actively foster traits of empathy, kindness, and compassion in their children, challenging the narrative that success is solely measured by material wealth and achievements.
As communities grapple with these issues, the discourse shifts towards finding balanced approaches that encourage responsible and empathetic behavior among the next generation.

Business Owner and Realtor Natalie DiBernardo Vies for Gilbert Mayor, Promises Comprehensive Leadership
Natalie DiBernardo, a local business owner and Realtor with deep roots in Gilbert, Arizona, has announced her candidacy for mayor, bringing a fresh perspective to the upcoming electoral race.
As a lifelong resident who previously sought a seat in the Arizona House of Representatives, DiBernardo enters the political arena alongside Vice Mayor Scott Anderson and newcomer Shane Krauser, intensifying the competition for the town's top position. Her decision to run was fueled by a perceived lack of leadership in addressing Gilbert's escalating issues, notably the recent surge in teen violence.
DiBernardo's personal connection to tragedyāa family experience of violenceāamplifies her commitment to addressing public safety and community well-being comprehensively.
Beyond public safety, she highlights the community's growing concerns over living costs, traffic congestion, and educational excellence. DiBernardo believes that the recent crises have united Gilbert's residents in their demand for decisive leadership to restore a sense of security and belonging.
Her campaign emphasizes sustained community engagement and proactive participation in local governance as essential steps toward meaningful change. DiBernardo advocates for a collective effort to foster peace, safety, and respect within the community, urging residents to embody the values they wish to see reflected in their surroundings. Passionate about preserving the quality of life that defines Gilbert, DiBernardo seeks to lead the town through its challenges, ensuring its continued prosperity and unity.
