Residents Invited to Discuss Gilbert's Utility Rate Increase Plans
Gilbert residents and business owners are invited to an open house at the Heritage Room of Gilbert Town Hall on Wednesday (Jan 24th) at 6 p.m. to learn about proposed utility rate increases for water, solid waste, and recycling services. The event will also be live-streamed at gilbertaz.gov/GilbertLive.
This open house comes ahead of the Gilbert Town Council's vote on February 6, 2024, on whether to approve these rate hikes. The proposed increases are driven by ongoing inflation and cost escalations affecting critical infrastructure projects, including the North Water Treatment Plant. The town aims to ensure the continued provision of clean, safe, and reliable drinking water.
For solid waste and recycling services, the proposal suggests a monthly rate increase of $8.52 for most residential customers, while commercial, non-residential, and roll-off services might see a 25% rate increase. The water service rate increase would be phased in to lessen the immediate financial burden, with an average increase of $17 for residential water bills in April 2024, followed by approximately $13 in 2025, and about $16 in 2026. The exact impact on bills will depend on individual usage.
The open house provides an opportunity for community members to ask questions, understand the rate changes, and learn about the town's infrastructure projects. Information on the rate proposals and a utility bill calculator is available at gilbertaz.gov/UtilityRates.
