New Glass Recycling Initiative Launched in Gilbert with Dedicated Drop-Off Locations

The Town of Gilbert has introduced a new initiative for glass recycling, offering residents the opportunity to recycle glass bottles, jugs, and jars at two designated drop-off locations. The initiative, developed in response to the 2021 removal of glass from Gilbert's curbside recycling program, aims to enhance the sustainability of the town's recycling efforts. The specific drop-off sites are located at Freestone Park and Discovery Park, with purple recycling bins exclusively for glass.

Residents are advised to follow certain guidelines to ensure effective recycling. These include recycling only glass bottles, jugs, and jars, removing all lids or caps, not bagging items, and ensuring that all glass is empty and clean. The program does not accept other types of glass like windows or glassware, and other recyclable materials or trash should not be left near the bins. The initiative responds to the issue of glass contaminating other recyclables like paper and plastic in curbside programs, which previously reduced the value of recycled materials.

The Solid Waste & Recycling Division of Gilbert will monitor the program's return on investment and effectiveness over the coming months. This assessment will determine whether the drop-off bins will become a permanent solution for glass recycling in the community. Residents are encouraged to adhere to the guidelines to keep contamination rates low, thereby contributing to the program's success.

GPS Hosts Job Fair: A Gateway to a Fulfilling Career in Education

Gilbert Public Schools (GPS) is conducting a job fair on January 17 at Highland High School from 4 to 6 p.m., targeting recruitment for teaching positions for the 2024/25 school year and filling various current openings. Representatives from all 39 GPS schools across elementary, junior high, and high schools, as well as departments like Transportation, Nutrition Services, and Preschool, will be present.

To help applicants succeed, GPS has shared valuable tips. Emphasizing the importance of first impressions, GPS advises a firm handshake to demonstrate confidence and interest. Additionally, confident body language, including maintaining good posture and making eye contact, is crucial. Applicants are encouraged to be open to various job opportunities within the district, showing flexibility and adaptability.

Preparation is key, and GPS suggests researching the district and its schools to understand its educational philosophy and achievements. This knowledge can help applicants tailor their approach and stand out as genuinely interested candidates. Furthermore, asking thoughtful questions about the district's initiatives, support systems, and professional development opportunities not only displays enthusiasm but also helps applicants make an informed choice about their potential future with GPS.

The job fair is an excellent opportunity for those aspiring to start or advance their careers in education. By mastering key aspects like handshakes, body language, demonstrating adaptability, conducting thorough research, and engaging with insightful questions, attendees can make a lasting positive impression on GPS recruiters.

Controversy Over PE Conference's Content Sparks Discussion at Gilbert School Board

The Gilbert Public Schools Governing Board approved a teacher's request to attend a physical education convention, despite concerns raised by board member Chad Thompson about the event's focus on social and emotional aspects.

Thompson criticized the convention for potentially turning educators into "amateur armchair psychologists" due to sessions on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Other board members, including Jill Humpherys and Sheila Rogers Uggetti, highlighted the importance of these topics in education and trusted the teacher's discretion in choosing relevant sessions.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous approval of the $1,200 expenditure and a shift in board leadership positions.
