Gilbert Police to Intensify Efforts Against Teen Violence Following Tragic Incidents

At a recent town council meeting, Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg addressed the issue of youth violence in the community, following concerns raised by several speakers during the public comment period. The discussion was prompted by the recent tragic deaths of three teenagers in the East Valley, including Preston Lord of Queen Creek, Hailey Stephens in Casa Grande, and Jamiere Jenkins in Pinal County.

The speakers, including concerned parents and community members, called for the council to publicly condemn the violence and to implement measures for safety and violence prevention. They emphasized the need for enhanced education and mental health resources in schools and advocated for a zero-tolerance policy towards violence.

Soelberg acknowledged the community's fear and frustration following these incidents. He confirmed that arrests have been made in the deaths of Stephens and Jenkins, while the Queen Creek Police Department is investigating Lordā€™s death. Soelberg reiterated the police department's commitment to condemning violence in the community and ensuring thorough investigations and prosecutions of those responsible.

Katey McPherson, a recent resident of Queen Creek, described the impact of the deaths as a "perfect storm of collective trauma" in the region. She urged leaders in Gilbert, Queen Creek, Chandler, and Mesa to work together on solutions, highlighting the crucial role of community support in addressing youth needs and preventing violence.

Nicki Connelly shared a personal account of her child being attacked outside Chandler Fashion Center in 2020, underscoring the ongoing issue of youth violence. She expressed relief that her son recovered but lamented the tragic fate of Preston Lord and others.

In response, Soelberg assured the community that all incidents of violence are being investigated. He urged people to report any concerns to the police department and highlighted ongoing efforts in teen safety education through school resource officers, crime prevention teams, and social media channels.

Gilbert to Offer More Parking Flexibility for Developers, Planning Commission Suggests

Gilbert's Planning Commission has proposed changes to the town's land development code, recommending more flexible parking reduction options for developers. This update, based on suggestions from Walker Consultants, aims to provide relief across various uses beyond the current shared parking and parking deferral options.

The proposal includes administrative and conditional use permits for reductions up to 50% in parking requirements. Despite concerns from commissioners about potential abuse by multifamily developers, a modified motion requiring conditional use permits for residential projects' parking reduction requests was approved.
