Potential Sales-Tax Increase and Bond for Gilbert's Public Services Under Consideration
Gilbert's town council is evaluating funding options for over $1 billion in projects for police, fire, and parks departments, considering a sales-tax increase and a bond.
They're exploring cost reductions and alternative funding sources first. The projects include park completions, a crime lab, and fire station renovations. The town faces challenges with escalating costs and public willingness for tax increases, leading to a focus on prioritizing essential projects.
Elf on the Shelf Adventure: Gilbert Police Spread Holiday Cheer
The McMahon family, after moving from Oregon to Gilbert, realized their Elf on the Shelf was missing. Jason McMahon, inspired by a similar story, contacted the Gilbert police, who enthusiastically arranged a make-believe extradition.
Officers brought the elf to the McMahon's home, pretending it had tried to break into their former house in Oregon. Ava McMahon, along with her friends, was overjoyed to see the elf in the back of a police car.
The family praised the police for their imaginative response, reinforcing their love for their new community in Gilbert.
East Valley Highways Face Litter Challenges; ADOT Steps Up Cleanup Efforts
Mesa-based delivery service owner Michael Forney noticed a rise in highway litter in the East Valley, confirmed by ADOT. The litter buildup was due to ADOT's previous contractor ceasing operations unexpectedly in September.
Reyes and Sons, the new contractor, started cleanup in November and is working on catching up. ADOT emphasizes the importance of public responsibility in preventing litter and highlights efforts to keep highways clean, including the allocation of funds by the Maricopa Association of Governments for highway cleanups.
