Gilbert Police Chief Urges Creation of Independent Crime Lab Amid Concerns

Gilbert Police Chief Michael Soelberg recently advocated for establishing an independent crime lab in Gilbert, estimating the cost to be $53.3 million.

Currently, the Gilbert Police relies on Mesa Police for crime lab services, a partnership that has raised concerns about cost control, evidence processing efficiency, and potential vulnerability if the collaboration with Mesa ends. Soelberg emphasized the need for Gilbert to manage its destiny in evidence processing to ensure successful prosecutions.

A consultant's report presented at the council retreat highlighted the drawbacks of the current arrangement with Mesa, including longer turnaround times and limited control over costs. The report suggested the possibility of partnering with Chandler in the future or exploring a public-private partnership.

Despite potential alternatives, the consultant ultimately recommended Gilbert build its own crime lab, citing improved efficiencies and reduced processing times as key outcomes. The estimated cost for the Gilbert-only lab was $53.3 million, with potential locations identified adjacent to the police evidence facility and the central station. Operational costs were estimated at $3.3 million.
