Developer in Gilbert's Heritage District Adapts Residential Plans Following Neighborhood Meeting

In Gilbert's Heritage District, a developer has reduced its residential unit plans from 668 to 300 apartments. Originally, the proposal consisted of 135 townhomes, five-story apartments, and ancillary commercial space. However, 18 acres were sold to the Town of Gilbert for a retention basin project. The revised project now includes one four-story building with 194 units and two three-story buildings, emphasizing luxury developments.

At a neighborhood meeting, concerns were voiced by residents, particularly regarding traffic and parking. Some residents requested the closure of the entrance to Aviary Way for all traffic except municipal vehicles, while others suggested a median to limit neighborhood exits. Additionally, it was noted that the proposed development's single access point on Neely Road could pose issues in case of an accident.

Transportation engineers stated that the anticipated daily trips with the new 300-unit plan would be 70% less than the prior 668-unit proposal. While parking spaces are proposed, the developer plans to submit a deviation to reduce total spaces by 35. The issue of a residential permit parking system was raised but met with concerns about enforcement.

The development's impact on local schools was discussed, with authorities indicating that the district had sufficient capacity for more students. The town required the 18 acres for a grass basin due to undersized capacity in the Vaughn Basin, which captures storm runoff. The project is aligned with the town's 2018 Redevelopment Plan for the Heritage District. It is expected to proceed through the approval process in early 2023, with presentation before the Town Council in February after the Planning Commission's study session and public hearing.

Gilbert's Live Life Festival: Music, Songwriting Secrets, and Supporting Veterans

Gilbert will host the "Live Life: A Songwriter’s Music Festival" on November 11, spotlighting country music. The festival's star attraction is Grammy-nominated artist David Lee Murphy.

However, it's not just about live performances; attendees will have the unique opportunity to explore the creative process behind popular songs and hear the stories of songwriters who convinced superstar artists like Tim McGraw, Kenny Chesney, and Miranda Lambert to record their tunes.

The event, to be held at 15225 E. Riggs Road in Gilbert, will feature not only live music but also a range of activities, including beer, wine, full bars, food trucks, axe throwing, cornhole, and merchandise.

In a gesture honoring Veterans Day, a portion of the festival's proceeds will be donated to the HeartStrings Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting veterans and their families.

Veterans Day Arrives: What's Open, What's Closed, and Why it Matters

Veterans Day, observed every year on November 11, is a significant national celebration honoring the service of American military personnel. Its origins are tied to the conclusion of World War I, specifically the armistice signed at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.

In 1938, legislation designated November 11 as a federal holiday, originally named "Armistice Day," aimed at recognizing World War I veterans. Subsequently, in 1954, the holiday was renamed Veterans Day to encompass veterans of all U.S. wars.

This year, Veterans Day falls on a Saturday, so federal employees and various government services will observe it on the preceding Friday, November 10. Services such as the U.S. Postal Service will be closed on the holiday, while UPS and FedEx are expected to operate with potential shipping delays due to the federal holiday.

Most banks, regulated by the Federal Reserve, will be closed on Veterans Day but open on Friday. Online banking services and ATMs should remain accessible. The New York Stock Exchange does not traditionally close for Veterans Day but will be closed this year as it does not usually operate on Saturdays.

National parks across the country will not only remain open on Veterans Day but also offer free admission. Government offices, both local and federal, will generally be closed on November 10. Essential services like police and fire departments will operate as usual.

Stores and restaurants will stay open, although some may have adjusted hours. Public schools may be closed on Friday, November 10, as part of the observance. Veterans Day distinguishes itself from Memorial Day in that it recognizes the service of all U.S. veterans, while Memorial Day is dedicated to honoring military members who have died in service.

Flying High with Hair Force Barber Shop: A Mesa Gem with an Aviation Twist

In Mesa, one small barbershop stands out not just for its top-notch haircuts and beard trims but for its unique aviation-themed twist. Hair Force Barber Shop, a veteran-owned small business, has been a beloved fixture for nearly a decade, offering more than just grooming; it's a place where aeronautical enthusiasts, veterans, and the entire community come together to celebrate their love for precision and camaraderie.

The story of Hair Force Barber Shop begins with the husband and wife duo, Bob and Jenn Heim. High school sweethearts hailing from Dubuque, Iowa, they embarked on their journey together early in life. Bob's path led him to the U.S. Air Force, where he served for nine years before earning a commission as an Air Force Officer. Jenn, on the other hand, discovered her passion for hairstyling during their time at Wright-Patt AFB in Dayton, Ohio, where she graduated from Barber College in 2004.

However, it wasn't until they set foot in the sunny state of Arizona, specifically Gilbert, that their entrepreneurial spirit took flight. The couple fell in love with the area while stationed at Luke AFB in the early 2000s. Upon Bob's retirement, they decided to make Gilbert their permanent home, which led to the birth of Hair Force Barber Shop in 2014.

The unique aviation theme of the shop pays tribute to Bob's Air Force career and their shared passion for aircraft. With two chairs and walls adorned with pictures and models of planes, stepping into Hair Force Barber Shop feels like entering an aviation museum with the added benefit of getting a top-notch haircut. The shop, located in the northeast corner of Southern and Power roads, exudes a cozy, welcoming atmosphere that ensures every customer leaves with a smile and a fresh look.

Jenn, the resident barber and stylist, has been perfecting her craft for nearly two decades. Her wealth of experience is evident in the precision of her work, and her warm personality makes every customer feel at ease. Whether you're a regular client or a first-time visitor, you're guaranteed not just a haircut but an experience worth remembering.

One unique aspect of Hair Force Barber Shop is its strong connection with the local community, particularly the residents of Leisure World retirement community. The aviation theme resonates with the veterans, creating a sense of camaraderie and nostalgia. The shop has become a cherished gathering place for sharing stories and creating lasting memories.

As Bob Heim, the owner, notes, "Our shop may not be the largest, but it's where big stories are shared, and new friendships take flight."

The Hair Force Barber Shop experience doesn't end when you leave the chair. It's a destination where the community comes together, stories are exchanged, and bonds are formed.
