From a Hay Capital to the Largest Town in America: Gilbert's Remarkable Journey

Credit: Gilbert Historical Museum

Gilbert, despite its population nearly outstripping St. Louis, is proudly a town, the largest in America. Its growth over the last 30 years outpaced many cities, but it has maintained its identity. In 1902, the Arizona Eastern Railway passed through William Gilbert's land, leading to the town's start. World War I elevated its importance as it became known as the 'Hay Shipping Capital of the World.' Gilbert was incorporated as a town in 1920 but had a population of fewer than 2,000 residents until 1970.

In the 1970s, Mayor Halleck pushed for annexation, shaping the town's unusual borders. Gilbert then had about 50 square miles to grow into. The connection of the Superstition Freeway to Gilbert Road in 1981 made it a desirable place to live while working in Phoenix. By 1990, the town's population grew fivefold to roughly 29,100 people. Its population kept expanding to around 275,346 by 2022, with expectations of reaching 306,700 by 2030.

Despite its runaway growth, Gilbert remains a town and has no plans to change. Being a town instead of a city has some legal and public identity distinctions, but Gilbert has continued to thrive as the USA's largest town.

Gilbert Joins Forces with Phoenix in Ambitious Wastewater-to-Drinking Water Project

Gilbert is considering collaborating with Phoenix on a regional advanced water purification facility as a response to the ongoing drought affecting the Colorado River.

Phoenix aims to turn wastewater into drinking water by 2030 and is seeking partners for this initiative. Gilbert relies on the Colorado River for 41% of its sustainable water supply, making it crucial for the town.

The memorandum of understanding doesn't require financial contributions from Gilbert, and the agreement can be terminated if necessary. Phoenix will lead the steering committee responsible for funding, governance structures, and federal funding for the project.

Gilbert's Historic Cosmo's Restaurant Site Set for Stunning Transformation

A former Italian restaurant site at Power and Williams Field roads in Gilbert will transform into the Bella Storia development, comprising 628 apartment units.

The town council unanimously approved the project's minor General Plan amendment, rezone, and annexation on a 74.45-acre site, which is located near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport.

This area was historically significant as the former site of Cosmo's Restaurant, which operated for 32 years. The Di Bella Family LLP is planning a mixed-use project, including multifamily units, single-family homes, and commercial space.

The design focuses on a pedestrian-friendly environment and maintains the area's architectural integrity.

Diamondbacks Dominate Game 2: Is This the Turning Point in the World Series?

Well, folks, it's time for the great Fall Classic, where grown men become kids again, chasing a little white ball around the park. And if Game 1 was any indication, we're in for a rollercoaster of a World Series.

Adolis Garcia, the man with the bat of the gods, smacked a walk-off home run in extra innings to give the Texas Rangers a heart-pounding Game 1 victory. The Diamondbacks must have thought they were in a wild west shootout, but as they say, what happens in Texas, stays in Texas.

Now, in Game 2, the Arizona Diamondbacks were out for blood, and they weren't here to play tiddlywinks. They put on a show, smashing their way to a dominant 7-1 win to even the series. Tommy Pham, the man with a plan, went 4-for-4 with two doubles, showing the Rangers that sometimes you need to double down on success. Gabriel Moreno started the party early with a solo home run, making it clear that the D-backs came to the ballpark with their A-game.

The Rangers, well, let's just say they forgot their hitting shoes at home, managing just four hits in the entire game. I mean, who turned out the lights in Texas?

The Diamondbacks were like the cowboys of the Wild West, taking control and not letting go. They had a plan, and it was a simple one: "Hit 'em hard, hit 'em fast." And it worked.

Now, I won't bore you with inning-by-inning details, but I can tell you this: the Diamondbacks are here to play, and they're not messing around. They've got veterans like Tommy Pham stepping up when it matters, and even Evan Longoria sacrificed bunted for the first time since 2014. When Longoria is laying one down, you know it's serious business. It's all about teamwork, folks, and the Diamondbacks are living proof of that.

Now, let's not forget the Texas Rangers, who put on a show in Game 1 with Corey Seager and Adolis Garcia coming to the rescue. But Game 2 was a different story. The Rangers' offense was MIA, missing in action for the entire game. Seager, Garcia, and Marcus Semien couldn't save the day this time. It's not just about the top of the order; it's the depth of the lineup that makes the Rangers dangerous. Unfortunately, their bottom half – Jonah Heim, Nathaniel Lowe, Josh Jung, and Leody Taveras – has been on vacation. They combined for a dismal 3-for-26 in this series.

Now, the big question is, what's Max Scherzer going to bring to the party in Game 3? The Rangers are hoping for a miracle because their bullpen can't do it all. Scherzer has been a mixed bag lately, allowing seven runs in his last two starts. Getting five good innings from him would be a win, especially with three consecutive games in Arizona. It's do-or-die time, folks.

So, grab your peanuts and Cracker Jack, because this World Series is far from over, and the drama is just beginning. Stay tuned!
